December to March: Calving Season in the South
Calving starts in earnest by February. Roughly half a million calves are born within a few weeks. This happens on the open plains near Ndutu. That draws lion, cheetah, and hyena in fast. Predators do not wait quietly at the edges here. They hunt in open daylight, right in front of your vehicle. Sound too intense for a family trip? It rarely feels that intense in person. The plains stay wide and open. Vehicles spread out well across the space. Compare that to the packed riverbanks of August. Calving season feels almost private by contrast.
April to May: The Long Rains
The herds drift north through the central Serengeti. Many pass through the Moru Kopjes as the southern plains dry out. Long columns of wildebeest form here. Some stretch for miles across open grass. Roads turn soft during this stretch. A few camps in the west and south close for the season. Game viewing slows down a little. So do the crowds, and so do the prices. This is a quiet month in the Serengeti. It is not a dramatic one.
June to July: Grumeti River Crossings
By June, the front of the herd reaches the Grumeti River. This river sits in the western corridor. Nile crocodiles wait in the pools here. They are waiting for exactly this moment. These crossings run smaller than the ones on the Mara River later in the year. But far fewer vehicles show up to watch them. Rutting season also starts around now. Expect males posturing and clashing across the plains. They are competing hard for mates.
August to October: Mara River Crossings
This is the window most people search for. It is what most people picture when they say “great migration.” Herds gather on the Tanzania side of the river. They mill around for hours. Sometimes the wait runs for days. Then the herd finally commits. Some make it across into Kenya. Some of them do not. The crocodiles wait either way. The crossing itself rarely happens on schedule. By October, many animals have already turned back south. The northern Serengeti empties out fast. That means less wildlife, but also far fewer vehicles.
November: The Short Rains Begin
The short rains arrive in early November. They push the herds south toward the central Serengeti. Viewing spreads out across the eastern plains. The Seronera area picks up more traffic too. Crowds thin out here as well. Most visitors have already left after the October crossings. This is an underrated month for lower prices. It also brings a quieter park overall.
Best Time to See the Great Migration Based on What You Want to Experience
The Mara River crossing is the postcard moment everyone wants. It is also the most crowded sighting of the year. Vehicles line up ten and fifteen deep at the best crossing points. Calving season offers something different. Newborn wildebeest and heavy predator action play out here. Both happen across wide open plains. Far fewer vehicles compete for the same view. Families with kids often do better here. So do people planning their first-ever safari trip. A packed river crossing rarely gives you that same space.
The shoulder months trade drama for quiet. April through May, and November, both fit this pattern. Parks stay quieter, and rates drop noticeably. You will not see a river crossing here. But you also will not share a sighting with fifteen other trucks. Know that trade-off before you pick a month.

How Far Ahead Should You Book?
Booking two months out does not work for every season. Camps along the Mara River crossing route fill up fast. So do the top spots near Ndutu for February calving. Expect to book nine to twelve months ahead for these. Book earlier still for the best tent positions. April, May, and November move at a slower pace. Those shoulder months often need only two to three months of notice. Sometimes it takes even less than that. If your dates are fixed, book the season first. Work out the rest of the trip after that.
