Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 Arrival in Nairobi
Your flight lands at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Our driver meets you there directly. The ride into the city runs along the Nairobi Expressway. It’s a 27 kilometer toll road that cuts drive time down a lot. You’ll check into the Concord Hotel or a similar property for the night. There’s no game drive scheduled today. Most international flights land in the afternoon or evening anyway. Dinner and rest come first tonight. Tomorrow starts the actual safari drive.
Day 2 Nairobi to the Masai Mara
Your driver picks you up early for the drive west. The route runs into the Great Rift Valley. A viewpoint along the way lets you see the valley floor stretch out below the road. Nearly every Kenya itinerary mentions this stop without saying much about it. This one is worth the five minutes it takes. You’ll reach the Masai Mara in time for lunch at Sentrim Mara. That’s our usual camp on this route. The afternoon opens with your first game drive. Lions, elephants, and the reserve’s resident cheetahs often show up close to the vehicle tracks.
Day 3 Full Day Safari in the Masai Mara
Day 3 isn’t about covering new ground. It’s about staying in one place long enough to see it properly. The safari runs on our private vehicle. That means your driver guide can adjust drive times around the sightings. There’s no fixed group schedule to follow. Morning light tends to bring out the reserve’s big cats before the heat sets in. You can add a Maasai village visit at extra cost. A hot air balloon flight is also available if it interests you. Dinner and the night both stay at Sentrim Mara again.
Day 4 Masai Mara to Lake Naivasha
Elephants and lions give way to hippos and flamingos on this leg. You’ll leave the Mara after breakfast and drive toward Naivasha. Lunch waits for you at the lakeside lodge. The afternoon includes a boat ride across Lake Naivasha. The lake holds roughly 400 recorded bird species. Fish eagles and pods of hippos sit along the shallows. From the boat, you’ll also walk Crescent Island. Zebra and giraffe roam freely there, with no predators around. Dinner and the night stay at Naivasha Kongoni or a similar property.
Day 5 End of Safari
Your final morning starts slow, with breakfast at your own pace. From Naivasha, the drive back toward Nairobi takes roughly two hours. Traffic near the city can add some time to that. Your driver drops you at the airport in time for your flight. The five days end right here. We can extend the trip if you’d rather add extra nights first.
Where You’ll Stay: Hotels on This Route
Sentrim Mara isn’t the lodge sitting inside the reserve gates. It’s the camp just outside them instead. That’s a deliberate trade for the price point this package sits at. Lodges inside the Masai Mara itself cost a lot more. You’re paying for the ten or fifteen minutes saved each morning getting into the park. Sentrim Mara sits close enough to the Talek Gate. The drive in barely eats into your game drive time.
Your first night stays at the Concord Hotel in Nairobi or a similar property. It’s a straightforward city hotel for one overnight stop before the safari starts. At Lake Naivasha, you’ll stay at Naivasha Kongoni or a similar lodge. It sits along the southern shore, close to the boat launch. You won’t lose much of the afternoon to transfers. None of these three properties call themselves luxury, and we won’t either. They’re solid, well run mid range stops chosen for location over polish. If you’d rather upgrade to a lodge inside the reserve gates, tell us when you book. We’ll price that version instead.
Is 5 Days Enough for a Kenya Safari?
Five days works for two parks. It doesn’t work well for three. Two nights in the Masai Mara is enough for repeat game drives. That lets you settle into a rhythm instead of rushing through one drive. A 5 days Kenya tour built around one major reserve covers plenty. Adding a lighter stop like Naivasha rounds it out. That combination covers the ground most first time visitors actually want.
Where five days falls short is the wildebeest migration. If the Mara River crossing is the whole point of your trip, two nights isn’t quite enough. Migration season really calls for four or five nights instead. Outside migration months, five days covers the Mara properly. Why does a solo traveler pay $223 more instead of double? The vehicle and driver guide cost stays fixed no matter who’s in the seats. One person or four people, the cost barely changes. Most sites never explain that plainly.
Rates on this route can shift with the season. Masai Mara park fees have historically climbed from July through December. That’s compared to the first half of the year. The shift pushes the overall trip cost up during that stretch. Our current published rate covers only February and.

Everyone’s chasing the Mara River crossing during that stretch. Park fees often climb during that same window. If watching the crossing isn’t the reason you’re going, book a shoulder month instead. January, February, and March give you the same lions and open plains. You’ll pay noticeably less for the same wildlife.
Booking early still matters regardless of season. Camps like Sentrim Mara fill up months ahead during busy windows. Cutting it close to your travel date limits which rooms are available. The overall trip cost may stay the same either way.
Practical Tips for Your Trip
Pack layers before anything else on this list. Mara mornings run cold enough for a fleece around 6am. The same game drive can turn quite hot by early afternoon. Wearing lighter colors helps too. Tsetse flies are drawn to dark blues and blacks more than lighter shades.
