You start in Kenya at Lake Nakuru and the Maasai Mara, then fly across the border into the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Lake Manyara. We route it in this order for a plain reason. Flight schedules out of the Mara connect more easily into northern Tanzania than the reverse direction, so the trip flows without long layovers in between.

That order also means the drama builds. Kenya opens the trip with open plains and pink flamingos on the lake. Tanzania closes it with the deepest wildlife concentration on the continent, inside the Ngorongoro Crater. Here’s what this route actually covers, park by park:

Crossing the Kenya-Tanzania Border on This Trip

Most first-time visitors picture a land border crossing, a passport stamp at a barrier, a long line in the midday sun. On this route, it isn’t that. The Kenya-to-Tanzania leg on Day 4 runs by light aircraft, not by road, connecting a Mara-area airstrip to the Serengeti’s Seronera airstrip.

Immigration happens at the airstrip itself, handled alongside the flight transfer rather than at a separate checkpoint. Your guide on the Kenya side hands you off, and a Tanzania-based guide picks you up on arrival. Luggage limits on these light aircraft do apply, so soft-sided bags travel better than hard suitcases on this leg.

This matters for one practical reason. A road crossing between the two countries can eat most of a day in driving and paperwork. Flying it instead keeps Day 4 short enough to still fit an afternoon game drive in the Serengeti. That’s the whole point of routing it this way.

Best Time to Visit for This Route

July through October is the strongest window for this exact route, and it isn’t close. Those months put the wildebeest migration inside the Maasai Mara itself, right where your Days 2 and 3 already sit. River crossings, when herds push across the Mara River chased by crocodiles, happen most often in August and September.

Prefer the Tanzania side of the migration instead? December through March shifts the herds south to the Serengeti’s short-grass plains, where calving season brings newborn wildebeest by the tens of thousands. Ngorongoro Crater holds strong game viewing all year, since its resident wildlife doesn’t migrate at all. Lake Manyara follows the same steady pattern, good in any season you travel.
