Most climbers on Kilimanjaro take this route. There's a reason for that. Machame climbs through five distinct climate zones: rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, then the arctic summit zone. Rainforest gives way to heather within a day. The scenery keeps changing, so the climb never feels flat. Camping the whole way, no huts here. The route also swings by Lava Tower for a climb-high, sleep-low day. That extra adjustment is why success rates run higher than Marangu. It's tougher underfoot and longer overall. Worth it? Most who finish say yes.
