Amboseli Day Trip from Nairobi

What This Trip Covers

Amboseli doesn't need three days. One is enough if you leave early. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is known for two things: elephant herds and Kilimanjaro views. Some of Africa's largest free-ranging herds live here. On a clear morning, the mountain fills the whole horizon behind them. Sound rushed? It isn't. The park is compact enough that a single day covers real ground. A morning game drive, lunch, an afternoon drive, then the road back to Nairobi.

Itinerary

Pickup is around 5:00 a.m., while Nairobi is still quiet. The drive heads south through Kajiado County, Maasai homesteads and acacia woodland rolling past the window. Amboseli National Park comes into view by about 9:00 a.m.

The game drive starts the moment you're through the gate. Worried the wildlife won't show up? Elephants are usually the first thing you see. Then Maasai giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, Cape buffalo. Over 400 bird species have been recorded here.

Observation Hill is the one stop where guests can leave the vehicle. Climb it and the whole park opens up: swamps, dry lake bed, and Kilimanjaro rising behind all of it. Few views in Kenya beat this one.

Lunch is around midday, at a lodge or a picnic site depending on the package. Then back out for an afternoon drive, when the heat breaks and the animals move again. Elephants head back to the swamps. Predators start to stir.

The drive back begins around 3:30 p.m. Nairobi comes into view again between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m., the day's dust still on the windshield.
